Community. Tumblr has the unique position of being a platform where various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/fandom\">fandoms<\/a> can gather virtually and discuss topics both new and old.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Forbes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/shephyken\/2023\/02\/19\/belonging-to-the-brand-how-community-is-reshaping-the-marketing-landscape\/?sh=14ff3b962fb7\">66% of companies<\/a> say their community impacts customer retention. Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/brands-social-media-communities\">90% of social media marketers<\/a> say building an active online community is critical to success.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you build a community around your own brand? Fortunately, I spoke to Tumblr Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Ryan to get some tips.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta_button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/cs\/ci\/?pg=98832452-a1c6-4911-8d99-700ee5007c0d&amp;pid=53&amp;ecid=&amp;hseid=&amp;hsic=\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"hs-cta-img \" style=\"height: auto !important;width: auto !important;max-width: 100% !important;border-width: 0px\" alt=\"Download Now: Free Social Media Strategy Template\" height=\"58\" width=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/no-cache.hubspot.com\/cta\/default\/53\/98832452-a1c6-4911-8d99-700ee5007c0d.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How to Foster Community Around Your Brand<\/h2>\n<p>As I said, community is the backbone of Tumblr&#8217;s longevity as a social media platform, so it\u2019s no suppose Ryan was able to drop excellent gems of advice.<\/p>\n<h3>Know What Makes Your Brand Special<\/h3>\n<p>Anyone familiar with Tumblr will tell you there are few online platforms like it. Over the years, Tumblr has become a haven for fans of different aspects of pop culture, such as comics, anime, film, and television.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan says the team behind Tumblr doesn&#8217;t shy away from the site\u2019s association with fandoms and enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We lean toward two brand tenets,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;The first one is fandom; we&#8217;re a great place for fans to <em>really <\/em>go deep into their particular fandom of choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The CMO says other platforms are places where fans may go to give live reactions to their favorite series, but Tumblr is where fandoms live long after a series wraps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of places like X serve as real-time destinations where you might go if the movie just premiered or the season finale just dropped, but that kind of long-tail of fandom is where Tumblr thrives,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;font-size: 12px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/hubfs\/Tumblr%20supernatural.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;width: 650px;height: auto;max-width: 100%\" title=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/supernatural?src=typed_query&amp;sort=top\"><em>Image Source<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ryan says this is partly due to Tumblr\u2018s unique position as a social media platform that isn\u2019t heavily driven by algorithms. Moreover, Ryan says the site is a &#8220;blank&#8221; platform that allows users to post any media type they want.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our users have the ability to create or produce their art and their stories around characters and plots they find compelling,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Fandom is a big source of our creativity and life on the platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tumblr\u2018s versatility brings us to Tumblr\u2019s second tenet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The other brand tenet is being a great place for art and artists,&#8221; Ryan says. &#8220;We are a blank platform and one of the only platforms that still allows all media types and has done so since the inception of Tumblr \u2026 That gives artists, especially, a ton of freedom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;font-size: 12px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/hubfs\/Tumblr%20Art.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;width: 650px;height: auto;max-width: 100%\" title=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/art?src=typed_query&amp;sort=top\"><em>Image Source<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, lean into what makes your brand unique, whether it&#8217;s your audience, the type of services and products you provide, or something else.<\/p>\n<h3>Pay Attention to Your Audience<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;We genuinely try to listen to what they need, what they want, what they&#8217;re doing on the platform and deliver back the right kind of services and content they&#8217;re asking for,&#8221; Ryan explains.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan recalls a recent trend in which a Tumblr user claimed &#8220;anything&#8221; can trend on the platform. The user then put two random words together in a post and encouraged other users to make the phrase go viral on Tumblr.<\/p>\n<p>The random words were &#8220;mole&#8221; and &#8220;interest,&#8221; and, sure enough, &#8220;mole interest&#8221; became a Tumblr trending topic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Mole interest&#8217; became a meme and trended at number one. We wrote a feature on it the next day on our Today Tab. It got a whole life of its own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;font-size: 12px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/hubfs\/Mole%20interest.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;width: 650px;height: auto;max-width: 100%\" title=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/mole%20interest?sort=top\"><em>Image Source<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Ryan said before, Tumblr is also a popular space for artists, so it&#8217;s no surprise the platform started a trend that appeals to the creative side of its consumers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did a campaign last year called Build-A-Beast, where we gave people weekly prompts around Halloween of a monster they could create,&#8221; he recalls. &#8220;It was written prompts, and users could respond with art matching the prompt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, the trend took off, and artists eagerly shared their creations all October long.<\/p>\n<p>To stay on top of the interests of Tumblr users, Ryan says the platform has an editorial team and staff dedicated to writing content wrap-ups and implementing social listening to stay in the know of user trends and hot topics.<\/p>\n<p>Consider a similar approach for your own brand and craft a team that is dedicated to tracking and reporting topics and discussions happening within your brand&#8217;s community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then you can see where trends are going,&#8221; Ryan advises.<\/p>\n<h3>Leverage Segmentation<\/h3>\n<p>Another key to building and maintaining a community around your brand is segmentation, according to Ryan. And that&#8217;s where HubSpot comes in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We use HubSpot to deliver a lot of content to lapsed users,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;We use a lot of heavy segmentation as far as tracking what lapsed users used to do on the platform, what they&#8217;re interested in, and the signals they&#8217;ve given us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ryan says that information is then used to deliver hyper-relevant messaging to those users to revive their interest in Tumblr.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, we find people are interested in past memes that are similar and have a slightly animal tone to them,&#8221; he says, &#8220;we&#8217;ll send mole interest to those users, and hopefully they&#8217;ll reactivate and be interested in the platform again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Be Transparent<\/h3>\n<p>Trust is crucial to community-building and to maintaining consumers. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/06\/3-ways-marketers-can-earn-and-keep-customer-trust\">80% of consumers <\/a>consider trust a deciding factor in their buying decisions.
